COCONUT ISLAND - KOH MAPHRAO
Getting to Know It
General Description
This tiny fishing and aquaculture island is almost connected to Phuket Island; in fact, it takes only two minutes by boat from Laem Hin Phuket Pier to Coconut Island Pier. It is a stunning island perfect FOR those that want to be very close to all the activities and amenities of Phuket, yet want the feeling of rural Thailand. The Island is only about 4 square kilometers in size. It has white sand beaches, and picturesque coconut and rubber tree farms.
The Island also boasts lush mangrove forests on part of its coast which can be explored by kayak during high tides. The Island also has several "floating restaurants" adjacent to aquaculture farms where fresh and delicious fish and seafood and Thai cuisine is available. These restaurants are popular for Thai tourists from Bangkok as well as foreign visitor.
A 5-Star Resort, The Village at Coconut Island was developed several years ago and is now expanding into its second phase, which will include a 6-hole golf course.
The Island is very scenic, with one concrete road winding its way from the main government pier across the Island, past the Village at Coconut Island resort, thru the little village community and then thru tree-covered farm lands until it ends right at Jindarin Beach Resort. Of course, Jindarin has its own pier and boat access and guests have the choice to travel by a 10-minute boat ride from Jindarin's pier to the Laem Hin Phuket pier, or to travel by golf cart 2 kilometers to the Coconut Island pier and then a 1 minute boat ride the the Laem Hin Phuket Pier.
